Healthy Hot Chocolate
Does the thought of hot chocolate make you happy? It does me. There’s something special about it. Hot chocolate can conjure up memories of winter time, being a child, going ice skating and just plain chocolate-y “pleasure”.
The downside of hot chocolate is all the sugar, dairy and, in today’s environment, a lot of chemicals. As an example, here are the ingredients of a common brand of hot chocolate: sugar, corn syrup, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated coconut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor. Yuck!!
You can definitely get the enjoyment of hot chocolate without the liabilities of consuming all the disease-causing ingredients listed above.
How about using actual raw organic cacao – a superfood in its own right, packed with minerals, antioxidants, calcium, iron and a natural mood elevator. No wonder chocolate makes us happy!
Depending on your health status you could use a little honey or maple syrup, but a good quality stevia is zero calories and, unlike artificial sweeteners, stevia is perfectly healthy for you.
Cinnamon is also a healthy spice and if you want an even “spicier” option consider a pinch of cayenne!
